Both suck. Merkel is only seen positively, because the economy mostly boomed during her years. But she did absolute jack shit to prepare the state for the demographic crisis we now have. All the problems we are now facing could and and should have been addressed back then, but the good economy just concealed them. Merkel did nothing to invest into the future of the country. All the money just went to the rich, as usual. One of the worst chancellors.

Merkel was reasonably decent at foreign policy. And she did know how to carry herself. Her domestic policy was questionable, though, and her reign was the time of the "black zero", aka the brilliant economic policy of cutting infrastructure spending to save money because surely highway bridges can do without maintenance for a couple decades. Actually, they sacrificed many things on the altar of reducing new debt at all cost, including a buildout of the power and data grids and the East German economy.

In my opinion the biggest contributor to our current problems is the CDU's economic incompetence, which has thoroughly undermined the stability of the country for a twenty year vanity project.

All in all she wasn't entirely shit, which is pretty good for the CDU these days. She was vastly more competent than Merz but that's not a tall hurdle to clear.

You people do realize we don't have neither dictatorship, nor monarchy in Germany? And don't be smart about her being the head of the party and therefore being able to tell everyone what to do. The CDU did a lot of shit even back then where Merkel was opposed to.

Oh, absolutely. But I do believe that the chancellor can't be fully separated from their party. There has to be a certain level of agreement or the party wouldn't put them up again next election.

By her own behavior she was relatively decent but still rooted in the CDU. And to my knowledge she didn't really oppose her party's spending policy much. Given that this spending policy was a gigantic exercise in shortsightedness I'd say that yes, I can factor that into my appraisal of her tenure.

It's not hard. The expired egg salad in my fridge is more capable than merz

Well, a rabbit would make a better chancellor. It least it would be cute.

Merz has the big problem of having neither empathy for nor the knowledge about the needs of an average, working citizen.

He has been a lawyer for large corporate entities and a professional politian all his life, and would not recognize real work if it bit him.

That's an unfair comparison. Merkel spent 16 years basically sitting on her hands, waiting for every crisis and problem to resolve itself.
Merz confidently strides towards a solution, but sadly has a lousy sense of direction.

By no means I'm a Merkel fan, never voted for her.

But she is several leagues better than Merz. I would not even want him to be the mayor of a tiny village, because he would be overwhelmed and incapable of dealing with everyday problems, like getting the trashcans cleaned regularly.

Merz is by far the worst chancellor Germany ever had.

she also had a decade+ of experience too so she knows the ins and out. remember putin tried to intimidate MERKEL with a overweight labrador? instead of a CAUCASIAN shepard, or any of the large aggressive guardian breeds.
