Because this is retrospective/correlational, a more plausible explanation is reverse causality, i.e., depressed people are more likely to want to have a pet in their life.

as someone who's extremely depressed and has pets. it's because I can talk to them and they don't treat me like garbage or try and tell me that my problems/issues are trivial because the animals problems are somehow worse.

I just want a friend, and animals fill that void. 'society' does not provide this to me, never has and I accept that it never will.
