Using all lanes available and merging with the zipper method is the most efficient way to deal with a lane closure.
Yeah, it's odd so many people are unaware the best way to keep the traffic flowing is to fill both lanes and merge at the end. Makes people livid.
It might have to do with motorists with big egos not letting people zipper merge that's causing rational people to not attempt it. They might be stuck ages at the merging point before someone lets them in.
