Been working on a small space-sim game. Looking for some feedback, criticism (Constructive preferred. "It's ass" is not constructive feedback), and suggestions!

I've been taking some time for the last day or two with the helper to create a small game similar to old flash games. I'm kind of proud of what helper and I pulled off, and would love to share it and get some feedback. I'm working on another more ambitious project on the side too.

I'd just like to see what people think of this one. 🙂

I've made several updates and now it should be very playable on mobile. I won't know until I hear more feedback. So don't hesitate to post a comment!

I gave it a try and was very confused frankly.

  • what’s the point? I thought the colored hexes were perhaps a map of a galaxy. I didn’t realize until I was getting shot that I was the colored hexes. It could use some instruction text.
  • on mobile, the ship movement buttons keeps trying to select the arrow as text. This should be pretty easily fixable.
  • maybe related to getting stuck highlighting arrows, I just kept spinning in circles.
  • I was definitely firing my gun, but it felt like I got one shot for every 5 of theirs as they swarmed me and I spun helplessly.

I'm going to work on mobile support a lot more now, I'm adding an "Auto-Lock" and "Auto-Fire" for turret based weapons (Which should help a lot when on mobile. I'm going to add a virtual stick to aim guns for manual aiming), I'm going to add a virtual stick for flight controls instead of arrows (I didn't even know it had arrows for moving in mobile 🤣 ) and it should be a lot more playable for phone users soon.

The issue is that I don't use my phone for more than just calls and porn so it's not something I have a lot of experience with.

I've got an update coming shortly that may help you out and it'd help me out greatly if you'd playtest it for me and give me a good and solid opinion of it. I know it's barebones right now for mobile support, so any advice or suggestions are absolutely welcome.

I do have to ask, do you play horizonal or vertical?

Reply to one of my comment here when you’re ready and I’ll take another look.

Regarding mobile design, I assume you’re using AI for this. I don’t use perplexity myself so I don’t 100% get it, but it’s just something you need to tell your agent to consider. It should be able to redesign your UI to be mobile first or “responsive” if you want to support all viewports (like tablet and such as well).

I’m on an iPhone 17 pro max which is pretty large. I usually browse Lemmy in portrait so that’s what I played your game in as well.

I'd give it a 15% me, 85% helper. Not my proudest thing to admit, but it's the only way to use some functions because I'm not really good with javaScript (I've got barely any experience with it).

Go ahead and give it another try, and we'll see if anything helper and I did actually made any sort of QoL difference. 🥲

I also took some time to improve some modules. I hope they feel and sound good.

I’ve been a software developer for 15+ years and I use AI to write all kinds of code for me. I don’t think you need to be ashamed of it. The anti-AI crowd will hate this, but AI lets me produce software faster than I ever could in my life. It’s a powerful tool and it will revolutionize the industry if not the world. Use it and get good with it would be my advice.

I gave it another try and the instructional text was a big help at both stages of the game. I totally get the ship building part now and I think if I had more time to sink into it, it would be really satisfying. I couldn’t get parts to rotate for me although I tried a bunch.

For the actual flying part, it was rough. I still feel like I keep spinning and flying is too sensitive to be useful. Plus with fire in the middle and no auto lock on target that I saw, I need one hand aiming and the other shooting. I feel like with basically a starter ship and loadout the game was way tough and I’m getting swarmed and dying pretty quick. If flying is a key part, then I’d add a smart aim or something to let players fly and shoot.

I don’t think it’s ultimately something I’d play again, but I think it has potential and with a bit more time and effort, it could be something really cool. Good luck to ya.

There is an auto-lock, and auto-fire. It's part of the weapon groups. I'll see if I can add it as part of the tutorial text. As for part rotation, I'll see if it's just obscured or not there.

Oh, and I think you may have too many RCS thrusters if you're turning really fast. I'm gonna be honest, it was MUuuuuuuuch worse at the start. I've reduced the turn speed by like... 80% from it's original rate. I'll reduce it more though to see how that helps.

Again, I really wanna thank you for your input.

I also want to say, by no means do I hate AI. I find AI to be a useful and powerful tool as you say, but it's the companies behind it right now that make me twitch. Big AI companies are the problem that I think we should be looking at more than actually blaming AI for all the crap going on. That's just my opinion anyway... It's like the old saying, "Don't blame the gun, blame the shooter."

To address the "What's the point" part... It's not meant to have a point yet as right now it's a proof of concept game that will soon have a more wave-based, get from A-B rogue-like feel.

As for your other points: It's all relatively good feedback, and thank you for it. I never really intended it to be used with mobile in mind, but I'll actively attempt to make more effort to support it from here in. I don't really play games on my phone like ever, so it always is secondary in my mind.

If I may ask, what weapon were you using? Some weapons are rather big, heavy-hitting, and slow. They're made for the bigger ships that show up later and not the small drones. There are smaller weapons that work better against the small drones (Prism beam turret, and PDT which is automatic aim/firing.)

I just started with whatever the default was selected. I launched it again and I must have hit something to advance directly to combat by mistake. I see you can edit stuff now.

You reached the end
