Jack was the real one. He wrote about his complete lack of surprise.

I think Jack was suffering from such complete sleep deprivation and memory loss that he started living in the Paper street house without knowing it until he created the Durden persona.

That movie is about being closeted, and how that attraction will find a (usually destructive) way out.
