Sounds like the same thing one or two cities in Texas put on the trash trucks. Giving addresses a blight score and sending citations for things like trash and broken down vehicles.
Its website says Next Base’s cameras record in up to 4K, and can capture every “license plate” with precision. The cameras don’t run automatic license plate reader (ALPR) software, though.
The thing is, you don't need an "ALPR" system on the vehicle. That can be done remotely after the fact. My point is, it's worse than you might be thinking.
I’m aware. As I said in the linked comment, I’m more concerned about the data being collected than I am about being recorded.
In the long term people need to control the collection and use of the data and establish some significant penalties for misuse. It would be nice if, in the US, we could establish that any data gathered by ALPRs is covered under the 4th amendment and require a warrant for starters.
I also think the data should be required to be stored by the government agency utilizing it, no third parties.
So the know the daily movements of anyone who speaks out against them.
They will slowly boil into acting on it, but god damn are they setting the stage.
Couple this with the fact that soon the only computing devices you will be able to buy are low memory tablets and other walled-garden locked down tech devices dependent on the cloud.
One bad tweet against Emperor Musk or Demigod Trump and they’ll fucking destroy you by cutting off your access to pay your bills.
That would require them to look forward or backwards, at all. The Texas trash trucks with this shir have them mounted to the side. Because they're intended to find issues they can cite your property for violations and score your neighborhood like an HOA Karen would.
I'm currently waiting in the break room of the S&DC I work at waiting for a truck. I was supposed to start work 35 minutes ago. If USPS doesn't have the budget to hand me a 40 year old LLV then I don't think they'll have the budget to put cameras in all of the fleet. Hell, I can't even get a Duck and the parking lot is full of them.
I heard they're also going to be putting them on mail carriers. It's only a matter of time until postmen start getting cut down like flock cameras are.
Sure, just like that Ring ad where their new software was only going to be looking for lost dogs ....
Plus, once they're approved for one use, it's incredibly easy to slip in a provision for other uses as well. That whole "we're doing this to protect the children" thing they keep bleating.
Even ignoring the surveillance state part... citing your property for ordinance violations. Dallas, Texas trash trucks already do that through a system like this.
They 100% would justify ordinance citations alone as "community safety".
Yes, but mail vans go to just about every single address and are operated by the federal government directly. There's no hoops the feds need to go through to get the footage (I mean, there already isn't much, but still, this removes the little hoops that remained).

Soooo...spy vans?

I don’t think people realize how widespread this is already. Look up Samsara. A shitton of work trucks/municipal vehicles already have cameras.
Can't hide behind "it's a private company surveiling you" when it's mounted on federal property
Plus, it'll feed into federal databases - yay!
But the servers do, that goes unspoken of course.
Oh, neat! So like, daily surveillance routes for everyone!
:-/
Flock cameras for your neighborhood.
Can I just put a QR code on my mailbox that has a sql injection?
Saw this coming…

Agreed.
...so they can sell it to the highest bidder and line Trump pockets

That means it looks directly at the road to check for potholes, right?

The article says these are forward-looking.

Now THATS mass surveillance.
Pretty soon it won't just be dogs attacking the mailman, poor bastards.
You have been Vanned

Soon they will make all the drivers wear meta glasses oh wait I mean federal government approved community safety glasses...
Wow. I mean, it’s a really obvious play, but… wow.
I get it, like the vans on V for Vendetta.
Article didn't say anything more specific than "help identify roadway conditions and support community safety"

Yup, just one software update, and even of ot starts innocent...
What else could ‘community safety’ mean here? They’re planning it from the start.
Even ignoring the surveillance state part... citing your property for ordinance violations. Dallas, Texas trash trucks already do that through a system like this.

I'll let you pick the exact offense cited, but I guarantee it's going to be racist.
Well, Flock USPS!
Don't most cars do that now?
