I don't know how endangered they are, I am guessing a lot, but if they come from the already captive population it's not bad, not as long as you attempt to find them a mate to breed to keep their population alive.
A big problem for captive cheetahs is that their meeting rituals (as I understand it) involve running across plains for miles. And that they are naturally very nervous (hence the puppy). I've read that breeding them in captivity is extremely difficult.
