AoE but slower, larger?
I've played AoE since the first version along with various others. Are there any games like AoE or C&C - real time, build bases to built units, harvest resources - but MUCH larger maps? That allow you to turtle up at a nice slow pace and then take out your enemies?
I play Civ and with mods for larger map sizes, it fills one need, but I'd really like a larger real-time harvest-resources type game, so… figured I'd ask.
I'm a casual player. I tweak settings on AoE to slow down the AI coming to attack me so I can build up walls and impenetrable lines of outposts and keeps. heh. So then I can send out raiding armies at my leisure. But it's not perfect, and the largest maps are still too small for my preferences.
Nova Roma is really nice as a city builder - if that had huge huge maps and other cities t conquer, it might be perfect. heh.

Beyond All Reason might be worth a try. Very large scale, albeit in a Sci-Fi setting.
Total Annihilation isn't bigger, but because of infinite resources (you still need "mines", but they are never out of resources) you can play from defense too.
0AD is a nice open source project started many years ago forked from AOE and is now an independent project and very customizable. It gets more impressive from update to update. If you play online you have or dont have the same turteling time like in aoe tho, depends on the set armistice time. Big Fan, very detailed, beautiful designed and historycally accurate!
Been years since I've played. Argh, looks like I can't scale up the GUI and on my system, it's unreadably small. But I'll google to see if that's fixable (the scale settings didn't help). heh. Thanks for the suggestion!
If anyone sees this - I appreciate all the replies but didn't want to spam up the thread. I've got a few things to check out :)
I hope they stopped having different meta for male and female villagers. Last time I checked they were better in certain tasks based on gender.
Hm havent played it for a while but in the last version update this is how the gendered civilians are introduced:
" Gendered Civilians:
In an effort to improve historical consistency, we have replaced the visual appearance of civilian units. Previously described as a "female citizen", the basic economic unit is now called the "civilian" and has male and female models.
This enhancement was made possible by incremental improvements of the engine, which now allows a unit to have variants not only in its appearance, but also in its voice and in other gendered characteristics.
In the civilizations displayed in the game, women did not usually hold citizenship, which was a prized social status. The "female citizen" was a misnomer. It was also incorrect to display all men as soldiers, and most women as servants. Instead, we want to describe the armies of 0 A.D. as followed by a group of minions of lower social status, able to support the soldiers in the army camp, but not on the battlefield. Those are the new Civilians. Citizens, on the other hand, were soldiers, able to wage war as well as working, which we have always been accurately describing in the game with the citizen-soldier concept. The ambiguity of the term "citizen" is removed: this word now only describes citizen soldiers.
This change does not touch the balance of the game at all. The so-called "female citizens" keep all their statistics, only their appearance and name have changed. The citizen soldiers are not touched at all. "
I remember Grey Goo feeling slow to me. Moving armies took awhile, and I think you could adjust the speed too.
Supreme Commander 2 also comes to mind.
Its been awhile, I just remember building big slow ass armies and wstching a million missiles launch at each other.
Maybe Planetary Annihilation: TITANS
Otherwise not real time, but maybe Heroes of might and magic might be up your alley
Supreme Commander. Lots of units, a good campaign and games against the AI are pretty fun.
