I loved how he had to even spell it out for his team that he was doing it on purpose when they told him norris was .8s away.

Oh my god George! What the FUCK lmao

Too bad for him, but that was really funny 🤣 he gonna be really pissed off

9

George: I'll just take a slightly wider line in than Lando and take him on the corner exit Lando: hold my juice box!

3

Or sit them at the back with 1 tyre compound, just to watch them meddle with the middle of the pack

6
lemmy.world

Hamilton got what he wanted.

Message that Russell needs to push, Russell pushes straight into a wall, Hamilton takes 3rd.

23

Nothing to do with Hamilton. Russell was following Norris's line. Norris clipped the wall before the corner. Russell clipped it at the same place, just a bit harder and broke the car. If he didn't break the car he would have gone around the corner just fine.

feddit.nl

Something new this season: Red Bulls being overtaken on track.

17

Just bad luck, really. They gambled and it didn't pay off, they probably knew that strategy was a big risk

7

Don't think RB cared about points here. They risked it all to continue their first place streak with a reckless moonshot strategy, and it didn't happen. This was the most likely outcome, and they knew that.

WDC and Constructors are still easily theirs.

5

I wouldn't call it a mistake, the SC just came at a bad time for them.

4
timreply

They had to finnaly Ferrari has some darn strategy

11

Ferrari tried to sacrifice Leclerc, but in the end it was just a double stack pit stop right ahead of them and then driving mistakes by Leclerc himself.

Maybe the trick is they need to actively try to sabotage one of their drivers to have a strategically decent race.

3
lemmy.one

Russell is not ready yet. Hamilton would have won if he was ahead

That's an interesting take, would have been great. But reality is it is very hard to overtake on that track unless you have at least 10kph speed difference and the person ahead has difficult drive. Lando is a good driver and has kept Lewis at bay previously.

2

2 things. Russell almost got by Lando and Lewis has much more experience than russell. The combination of these things leads me to believe that Lewis would have gotten past Lando. Once Lando would have been cleared, Sainz would have been a sitting duck.

2

Liam Lawson in net points scoring positions when Max /Checo pit :)

He might get Alonso as well after the penalty

That would take him to 9th

10
feddit.de

Wow, just saw the Perez move on Albon in the post-race discussion. Just dive-bombed him. Very clumsy. Hope he gets a penalty for that one.

9

ICYMI: 5 sec penalty that didn't actually change his position...

4

I've never been so happy to hear the Spanish national anthem in my life.

9
feddit.de

Terrible camera work once again. We didn't see what really happened to Yuki, we didn't see HAM and RUS switching places, we didn't see VER overtaking HUL. The director is just frantically switching back and forth between cars.

8

There goes the "will they, won't they?" of Red Bull taking all of the wins this year. Good work from Sainz, Norris and Hamilton; that was a bit embarrassing from Russell.

8

It sucks for LEC but it totally helped SAI. When the SC came out LEC dropped back by more than 5 seconds so that nobody even entered the pit lane before SAI was serviced. That led to everyone being lined up right behind LEC.

It was self inflicted but for the greater good.

3
lemm.ee

What a gamble for Merc. Wow.

Disastrous pitstop for Alonso. Did the rear jackman prematurely drop the car?

7
hydrashokreply
sh.itjust.works

They said during the broadcast that the car slipped off the new jack design and so one side was still on the ground. Likely had to wait for the left side to change tires before dropping and relifting the car so the right side could be taken off and replaced.

6
Junereply

Both right side tires got jammed. Very curious to find out what happened.

2

Max is sliding so damn much. This is so fucking weird to see. That car really doesn’t like this track.

7

Hands down best race of the season. And all it took was for RedBull to not be around.

7

Dang, Ocon was doing so well.

Funny how the circumstances change just as drivers get comfortable with their positions.

7

Every time I hear the Italian anthem I can't help but think 'stop it you're just encouraging them.'

6

Perez-Ocon-Alonso battle on a street circuit with close walls (👁 ͜ʖ👁)

6

Sainz actually has this race in his pocket at the moment. Unbelievably comfortable right now.

6

It was a poor strategy, IMO.

RB should have started on mediums or even softs and assumed there would be a safety car.

Then they could have pushed up and pitted for new tires with everyone else. Starting on the hard tires would have been a good strategy on a different track, but the hosts were saying on the preshow that there's been a safety in every previous race.

Of course, hindsight is 20/20, and if there had not been a safety, it may have been one of the greatest wins ever for RB that we'd all be gobsmacked about for years, so who knows.

Anybody dislike the production today even if the race has a great end? It felt like it took so long to see replays of any significant incidents/moves, if we saw them at all.

Plus, it was great to watch the four racing at the end for so long, but why take away the time splits? They just showed like lap times between two drivers at a time for all of it.

5

I didn't think it was too bad, but holy cow those overpasses kept getting in the way on the heli shots!

3

Aren't Perez and Albon under investigation after the race for VSC infringement and causing a collision?

Any chances of further penalties?

5

Oh man. Absolutely gutted for Ocon. Fucking brutal after such a good drive.

5

I was a little bored at first but it really picked up the last 20 laps or so. Great finish.

3

I know it makes sense for the Ferrari 1-2 but I really don't want Leclerc to have to sacrifice his race to make it happen.

4

Why wouldn't he keep going to the pits? He seems like the biggest brat on the grid.

1

A taste of what this season would have been like without Verstappen.

4

DNF for Tsunoda, yikes. He DNS'ed the last race. What's going on with his car? Damage from contact.

4

I really don't know what to expect from this race in terms of excitement but I'm happy it's race day!

4

This is my favorite race of the season so far. Sainz did a masterful job at the end.

This is my favorite race of the season so far.

I think you mean race end. The first 45 laps were exceptionally dull

1
Sentaureply
lemmy.one

It was tense yes. But it was tense because everybody was waiting for others to make a move or a mistake(nobody was proactively trying to do anything). By that logic Monaco every year is similarly tense because people are often running nose to tail and hence Monaco should also be considered as good races.

Claidheamhreply
slrpnk.net

Yeah. This year's Monaco was a banger, like so many before it.

4
Sentaureply
lemmy.one

There have been like 3-4 good Monaco races in the past 15 years. Out of the three-four good ones, 3 were good because of rain/variable weather. Occasionally it could be a good tactical battle revolving around the pitstops(see Monaco 2022 and 2023) but overtaking is too hard now to have excitement in dry conditions

2
Claidheamhreply
slrpnk.net

I agree overtaking's too hard. But motorsport can be plenty exciting without overtaking.

2

I agree. But the has to be some avenue for possible changes to the racing order. Can't undercut in races like Singapore or Monaco because tyres take longer to get into the window and because the field is bunched as everyone is going artificially slow. Can't overcut these days because everybody is going slow and saving tyres.

Take Monza for example. It is hard to overtake there as well because of the reduced effects of drs and slipstream but the race is never boring because drivers are making a genuine attempt to overtake and all the off track tactics like overcut, undercut are also viable.

1

I thought the scramble after the first safety car was great as well.

3

was really looking forward to ONE week where we didn’t hear them talk about max all race long and we could focus on a real fight at the front…but no. 5 laps in and it was already “max is gonna lead the race” and “he has a real chance”

like, okay, how about you wait til SOMETHING happens before declaring that crap

/rant

3

Did Lando hit the wall after the line? 😂

3

Man both RBs taking out their frustration on poor old tsunoda

3

Do we know what exactly was damaged on Yuki's car? The camera angle they showed didn't make it seem like it was big contact

3
No1
aussie.zone

Can't be a RB procession if they don't lead from pole.

3
timreply

How many laps before max is at the top?

2
feddit.nl

Perez, why are you still at your starting position behind a replacement driver?

2
Junereply

I’m guessing damage is playing a part. I saw carbon falling off when he had contact with Yuki.

1

Is this SC really weird or is it just me?

2

And at Williams, I think. Pretty sure at this rate we're not going to see Sargeant around much longer.

1

And there's the Ferrari strategy fuck up: why didn't the pit LEC now? There's a huge gap to ALO.

EDIT: and it just got worse. 🙄

2
lemmy.world

I hope Ferrari doesn't just run away with it today, and we can see Mercedes and McLaren challenge them. It'll be interesting to see if RB can do anything from back there, too.

1

This is Ferrari we're talking about, there is no way they will let Ferrari run away with it.

2

Newey looking at the AT; I wish I could see what he sees when studying aero details.

1
feddit.de

Probably clipped the inside wall which broke the suspension. There's a bit of a bump right before the corner. (at least in the F1 game, presumably it's there in real life too)
