Send me $1 and I’ll explain how it happened.

Ah man I only got this $50. Can you make change? No wait, I’ll just use this $5, can I get that $50 back? I’ll need it back in small bills though. Also this pack of gum.

Already has been meme.

The US is the origin of the term "snake oil".

(Was curious and looked it up - sounds like no, but that would have been cool.)

The term comes from the "snake oil" that was sold as a cure-all elixir for many kinds of physiological problems. Many 18th-century European and 19th-century United States entrepreneurs advertised and sold mineral oil (often mixed with various active and inactive household herbs, spices, drugs, and compounds, but containing no snake-derived substances whatsoever) as "snake oil liniment", making claims about its efficacy as a panacea. ^(source)^

It's a result of decreasing both regulatory oversight and free market competition. So yes and it's not getting better until the US political system changes drastically.
