Slight devil's advocate position:
Given for the past decade, the current automated system for places that want to do this seems to be to scan your driving license or passport to store in some private database for some arbitrary length of time, this seems to be an improvement from that from where I'm sat. At least a random pub landlord, that knows nothing about infosec, doesn't get a copy of your ID anymore.
Though hopefully this stays at the places that I don't really go to given they're pretty much only deployed in places targeting students. I can't imagine your standard boozer is going to suddenly deploy door checks on everyone when there weren't any before
If this ever becomes mandatory, I'll just start homebrewing.
Avoid the inconvenience of a small piece of paper by simply using this "Unified Surveillance Device'.
