Pluralistic: Spying on kids to save kids from spying is very, very stupid
And all other parts of this are very, very stupid too.
At hardly any prior time have children/teenagers been such a small share of the population of western countries as they are now. So whatever problems there are that concern children/teenagers, they are much less relevant than they may once have been.
Mainstream social media is ultimately part of the advertising industry. Minors generally don't have a lot of money to spend on anything advertised on it; so social media companies don't have a single rational reason to target minors especially more than adults. Minors are one of the least lucrative advertising targets in the world.
Minors are targeted to influence purchasing behaviour of their parents and family, and are most influential.
For brands it’s a way to corner a next generation.
Sorry but it’s a bad take.
The greater good is forcing social media to not be damaging period.
Sure "protect the children" by cutting off their access to friends and information.
While your at it, don't make social media less addictive to adults while forcing all adults to kyc themselves and have their identity stolen.

I mean, it is normal that governments try to save laws that were found unconstitutional by removing the bits that were found unconstitutional. That's not why we should be outraged about it.
We should be outraged about it because it should be a societal goal that young people be allowed to live happy lives that give them meaning, friendship, and connection. What better place to do so than the Internet?!
I don't see the internet necessarily as one of the best places. It's like an adult bar with lots of different people and lots of dangerous people and you should be mature to navigate.
Sane parents don't take their kids to the bar. And sane parents and schools implement network controls to prevent access to non didactic content. They can still chat and share memes, but without a schedule or supervision, it's simply ludicrous to me.
