If I imagine myself as a god who created a universe, and I expressed interest in the sentient races in that universe, I think I'd be most impressed by the ones who had a deep understanding of mathematics, philosophy, the arts, natural sciences, and engineering, in that approximate order.

Mathematics and philosophy because they are more likely to apply even outside of the universe, and they might have figured something out that I could use, so I'd really only be interested in parts that surpassed what I knew. The arts because I might be entertained, which is probably the reason I created the universe in the first place. Natural sciences because they are expressing interest in what I created, and engineering because I'd imagine that there might be feats of engineering that are just interesting to look at.

So, my point is because our society doesn't elevate the people in those fields, engineering excepted, really, isn't it our entire society that is pranking itself by wasting our lives doing things that aren't all that important in the grand scheme of things?
