Canada is entering a genuine period of economic realignment. Its old relationship with the United States can no longer be treated as permanent, and the country has legitimate reasons to diversify trade, expand infrastructure and protect its economic sovereignty.
But national strength is only half the test.
A country can sign agreements across several continents while its citizens remain dependent on landlords, banks, concentrated employers and expensive insurers. It can promise hundreds of billions of dollars in investment while renters cannot plan five years ahead, displaced workers struggle to navigate retraining programs, and qualified entrepreneurs cannot obtain financing without already owning property.
“Canada Strong for Whom?” examines the distance between Ottawa’s polished economic narrative and the daily economic position of ordinary Canadians. It asks whether announced projects are built, financed or merely proposed; whether housing policy creates durable affordability; whether public support is accessible in practice; and whether economic development raises wages, productivity and household security.
The essay & podcast argues that a stronger Canada must produce stronger citizens. Trade diversification and national infrastructure matter, but they cannot substitute for affordable housing, meaningful bargaining power, accessible capital and institutions that operate on the timeline of the people they are supposed to serve.
