Needed to replace an older server while on a budget. Went for a rackmount chassis with "normal" ATX hardware inside

I was considering something new from supermicro, but I decided to go considering grade for a change, as I mainly just need single threaded performance from this one.

My only requirement was rack mount, so I went for a Ryzen 5 build inside a rack mount chassis from Inter-Tech. My first build combining these two worlds.

I'm gonna miss IPMI, though.

You can get bolt-on products like jetkvm, or build a pikvm

+1 for pikvm. Expensive, but very powerful and very portable. My favorite part of them is their APL that lets me noninteractively, programmatically, interact with hardware buttons

This is why I did for my homelab. I had an Dell OptiPlex 3020 (or something in the 3000 series), took everything except the motherboard and PSU (becuase those were Dells own form factor) and bought those new. A the sole user of what is on my server a consumer i5 is enough, even streaming with Jellyfin works without problems.

Silverstone and Supermicro (I think) make 4U rack cases that can have desktop attachment hardware installed, which is fun.

I’m using a RM400 that I got used for like 80 bucks and installed the feet on it to use it vertically.

What are you doing that mainly needs single threaded performance, running a Minecraft server?

That too, yes. General game server for a few games I play with friends, plus some datacrunching from time to time.

I did this for a friends buisness when we build a small rack for frigate, backup, etc. it’s been great. Cost more up front but I am super envious of her build.
