Ooh the pictures are .avif files. I haven't seen that format used very much in the wild!

Interesting! It must be a lemmy.zip and instance-based thing. Most of what I save from Lemmy are mostly .jpeg and sometimes .webp images.

Edit: Yeah it looks like different Lemmy instances can proxy images in different ways and it is up to the instance admins on how they handle images. Some instances can even use OCR/image detection on their images! Your instance seems to care a lot about image quality and compression for their users, which is a good thing!

Possibly, I'm using Jerboa so I can't confirm it! Your app could convert it, but it doesnt seem common enough to be the case. I looked at a few posts from people from lemmy.zip, and all their posts are .avif pics, so it seems like it's done via the instance server. I could be wrong as it is just my guess though lol
