Another World, what a great game! This video goes into the techniques used to create such an iconic style back in 1991 on the hardware of the time, and all fitting on a single floppy disk (880k or maybe 837k).

It discusses the maths and code, but I don't think you don't need to be good at either to enjoy the video.
