EmojiReact vs. Like w/ content?
Hm... FEP-c0e0: Emoji reactions details two ways to federate an Emoji reaction:
EmojiReactactivityLikewithcontent(as opposed to a regularLike, which has no content)
In testing, I noticed that misskey (or at least, the site I was testing with, birb.space) sends the latter. I don't know what sends the former, and if NodeBB were to start federating out EmojiReact, would it be broadly understood?
Perhaps I should federate out both at once.

@julian @silverpill Sorry to go off, but this exact struggle is why I find Fedi implementation so frustrating. I'll wait until there's an official "we made up our damn minds" spec before spending any of my limited time and effort on it lol
@[email protected] heheh, I get that too. Sometimes I can't resist doing it anyway because the feature itself is interesting.
I just know for this FEP itself, it was descriptive rather than prescriptive... which is fancy terminology for saying "somebody did it first, so we're describing it after-the-fact instead of telling you how to do it from scratch"
:shrug:
So whenever FEPs like that happen, they're usually more open-ended and contain multiple approaches to reach the same goal.
C'est la vie.
Okay, NodeBB can now be configured to send out
EmojiReact(default) orLike.Of note, Misskey seems to assume it is :heart:, possibly missing support for EmojiReact.
@julian I just had an idea. You could collect a list of emojis that have got a positive meaning. These could be transmitted as
Like, while the other could be transmitted asEmojiReact.EmojiReactis used by Pleroma.Idk about others, I started with
EmojiReactbut then switched toLike- Mastodon users can see a "favorite" that way.@silverpill @julian
Likeat least has got the advantage to use the existing vocabulary. At Friendica we currently process both but we can't send - exactly because of the problem that we're still undecided which way to go.A problem is that you could send a negative emoji - that would be received as a like (which is normally interpretet as positive) for example on Mastodon. And this can be confusing.
@heluecht @silverpill @technical-discussion @julian pleroma and all the other implementations aint implementing this, so to avoid becoming weird about reactions like misskey you should account for existing software
Thanks @[email protected]! It's good to know that Friendica processes both. It means NodeBB defaulting to sending
EmojiReactis likely the correct path forward.We support both Emoji reactions and upvotes, which are translated to EmojiReact and Like, respectively. :blush:
@heluecht @silverpill @technical-discussion @julian it makes no sense to me to turn emoji reactions into likes. They are inherently different things. If one wants to support emoji reactions in their software, go look at how people are actually using them in everyday life. There are a totally different form of communication then a like. You can look at a popular user on Misskey to see how they are being used in reality
@[email protected] what about something in the middle... converting :heart: and :+1: into a like?
@julian I'm not personally opposed to that, tho it seems still sorta silly
@heluecht
inaccurate representation vs lost signal
I think the former is better for the majority of users. You can also make it an admin setting or even an account setting.
@liaizon
@[email protected] lost signal only if the UX for both emoji reactions and likes are collapsed.
Otherwise, right signal for the right intent?
@julian Regular users don't know what software supports reactions and what software is installed on a remote server. They click on an emoji but the reaction never reaches the other side.
@heluecht @liaizon
@liaizon @silverpill @julian Imagine, someone posts that their cat passed away. So you send a 😭 - which then arrives as a "like". I don't think that this would be appropriate.
@silverpill
I think we can use the backend to check whether the remote instance supports emoji reactions. Pleroma and Akkoma can check
nodeinfo, Mastodon and Iceshrimp can checkinstance, but as for Misskey, I don't currently know which API to use to find that information.@julian @technical-discussion @heluecht @liaizon
@caohuak No, this path leads to capability negotiation hell.
@silverpill @caohuak I wouldn't want to go that way either. Especially since our system isn't even created in a way to support this.
@[email protected] I may do the same, unfortunate though, it means the more explicit activity will never be picked up
