They also inform the nation's energy policies, meaning taking responsibility for federally funded energy transportation and coordination.

Those Texas price gouging electrical bills, they become nationwide under desantis.

8

Yeah, if we could just go ahead and not let Texas and Florida export their freedumb that’d be great.

6

That and more. They have a mandate for nuclear nonproliferation, but it’s more accurate to think of them as America’s R&D lab. The National Labs are fucking incredible! They are so much more than the DoD’s innovation lab. They do a ton of research that isn’t possible for the private sector. They also own and make available equipment that is difficult for individuals to maintain for example: Fermilabs has a particular accelerator, Sandia has the Z machine and a MEMS foundry, and Oak Ridge has one of the most powerful supercomputers and several labs focusing on neutron and nuclear power. Fuck just look up the patents and Nobel Prizes for Lawrence Livermore, Argonne, and Los Alamos. Yes there is a ton of nuclear but they cover so much more. They’re amazing and a national treasure!

30

Yup. They oversee the nuclear weapon stockpile, as well as all the fissile materials- including weapons grade stuff- in the US.

Feudalism. We already live in a system of neo digital feudalism where you own nothing. DeSatan master of the Dick Handle state is aiming to bridge our digital and analog feudal future faster than it is happening without him.

Maybe he thinks that it’ll just work like an honesty box. That would level things out actually because it does act like an honesty box for the super rich already.

We all buy guns and ammo and go mad max. DOJ exists but if there are enough crimes, it won't be paid enough to handle them all. Also, people would just kill cops with ACAB mentality. They'll run out eventually.

DeSantis is a Harvard law school grad and Navy lawyer, he absolutely has an idea what all of those governmental entities do, this is just him and the GOP trying to normalize the fascistic accumulation of power, step one of becoming a dictatorship.

Also this is the GOP's plan to do exactly that:

Project 2025

https://www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/conservatives-aim-to-restructure-u-s-government-and-replace-it-with-trumps-vision

It's just a step by step to purge the government, then whatever else, of undesirables while making an effort to destroy our government one piece at a time. Fascistic Libertarian hellscape here we come! (Also this is nothing new from them, just more open fascism)

81

No idea what DoC does either, clearly. This is the problem with these people- no idea WTF they're talking about and nobody holds them to account for that.

20

Most people don’t and it makes me sad. Our National Labs are fucking treasures but so few people know how much of an impact they have on our technology and lives.

17
azn03reply

Yeah, so what does he want to do with nuclear material along with all of the research around the country? I don't think people know that Energy is responsible for our nuclear stockpile. Not Defense.

8

Naw he'll just make the military responsible for all the nuclear stuff. It's the standard GOP response.

2

Reaganomics was a horrendous failure for this country, and nearly 50 years later here we are with Republicans pushing those policies again on the American people.

What DeSatan is talking about is a continuation of Reagan's terrible "Starve the Beast" policies.

Starve the Beast is a plan by conservatives to reduce funding for various government departments and programs to a level below which those entities can function properly. Salaries and equipment cost money. Below a certain level, you can't do your job properly. And that's what Republicans have been pushing for a few decades now. Cut funding for programs, and then claim those same programs aren't doing their job properly, and use that as the excuse to kill off those programs altogether.

It is a self fulfilling prophecy all so big business and the ultra rich can pollute more, hide their real wealth from taxes, and make our children dumb enough that future generations willingly vote Republican.

59

It's more that he wants to destroy the regulatory systems that prevent companies from doing anything they want. This is a big step for fascism. Hitler and Mussolini both deregulated the markets and privatized everything they could. Fascism is simply Capitalism run rampant. After that they usually invade another country and create a slave labor force, which is why he wants to "go to war with the cartels."

19
lemmy.world

So no federal taxes; education; or commerce regulation?

Because that's going to end well.

12

Of course they do.

Suppressed minorities and women? White men ruling EVERYTHING?

It's like their wet dream.

4

This is the problem with a party whose entire political platform is to prove that government doesn't work. It wants dysfunction.

33
lemmy.world

So he'd make the USA into a non-functional country? Sounds about right.

32

I mean that's been their goal for decades. You see it plainly in their attempts on the Post Office and Social Security. They want to privatize everything. Strip the government for parts and sell it all to private corporations. No Department of Energy? Guess we'll have to just let the power companies manage our grid with no oversight. No Department of Education? Guess your only options for education are for profit private schools if you can afford to attend them. No IRS to collect those pesky and complicated income taxes? Guess we'll have to switch to collecting everything via sales tax. Oh what's that? Not enough money? Good thing we have this Social Security trust fund that's just been sitting here not being used for Wall St speculationcollecting dust.

But he'll have the backing of the entire Republican party once Donny passes away.

I love how even his childish simplistic plan was over thought. Why get rid of all of them when the IRS will single handedly kill the country if eliminated. That military budget that gets R's so hard goes bye bye.

It hasn’t been the party of law and order for decades at this point.

Nixon showed the cracks, Reagan opened the floodgates, and the Twice-Impeached One showed how far they can push people.

Yeah and with no taxes the government would have no money and default within a month and the country would crumble within a year and be conquered by Russia of all places within two.

There are reasons we pay taxes. Taxes are not bad. Tax rules where the rich don't pay ARE bad

21

I agree that taxes are not bad, however getting the rich to actually pay taxes seems impossible for our government.

7
lemmy.one

Sure, just remove the department that manages the nations nukes, nbd.

7

Just have the nuclear weapons program under the department of housing and urban development.

3

Yep.. More evidence, not that we needed it, that he is a complete moron

2

It's so weird seeing the IRS as one of the more prominent victims of partisan polarization, especially with a ridiculous enough promise even we libertarian-minded folk tend to react along the lines of "whoah that's pretty crazy to jump to, the budget is a system that needs adjusted with care even if - especially if - that's your goal". It's as if he's trying to cater specifically to really dumb business owners.

I fail to see how rah rah DoE/DoC even makes sense as a campaign promise.

7

I become more and more convinced that DeSantis is to make Trump palatable again.

Oh yes, instead of the IRS we get private companies who knock on our doors and harass us, who will take a far larger cut than before for the sake of privatization. Taxes gotta be collected and sorry its pointless to be angry at the IRS when they are just following the laws that congress have established.

13
Maggotyreply

We'd get the auto generated results we've been asking for. But the entire back end process would be a black box so there's no way to know if they're telling you the truth. And they'd figure out a way to make it a tier subscriber system too.

4
lemmy.world

And they'd send you to a for-profit collection agency to charge you huge amounts of interest on any debt they decide you have, which you can't contest except by going through arbitration. And the corporate side always comes out on top in arbitration.

2
Maggotyreply
lemmy.world

Oh no, they can't leverage bench warrants for subpoenas they never delivered if they go with Arbitration. In court they get the cops to haul you in after you lost because you didn't know you had a court date, and the judge just orders you to pay a monthly amount that bears little resemblance to your finances. That's because they do them in batches and there's about a minute to argue your case against the Judge's golf buddy. Then when you can't pay you keep getting sent to jail.

It's already just a matter of time until we bring debtor's prison back officially and force people to "work off their debt". Which will, of course, be impossible to achieve.

2

Oh yes but we can't call them debtors prisons or workhouses yet.
