This shit is just engagement spam. I got one the other day that was all like "this number is in my contact list but I don't recognize it. who are you?" *block* *report spam* *delete*

What's the end goal? Getting me to buy gold or gift cards or something?

Personally, I think the goal is to get any response at all. "This is a valid number with a real person monitoring it" is in itself valuable enough information to these fucking parasites. Gather enough of them into a list and you can very likely sell it.

When I'm expecting an important phone call from someone not in my contact list (which isn't terribly often), I'll answer the phone regardless of the number. If that number ends up being a spam call, I hang up immediately but I always subsequently notice an increase in spam calls. They want to know you're there. If they know you're there, they hit you more.
