Ever felt pointless? Or like your life has little meaning? Well first off I'm sorry to hear that, but second, spare a thought for the Puchicalator, the world's shortest escalator, based in Kawasaki, just outside Tokyo, Japan.

At just 83.4 cm tall, it takes you from the ground floor to… well, still the ground floor. Officially crowned by Guinness World Records as the shortest escalator on Earth, the Puchicalator lives inside More’s Department Store, and has been heroically carrying people a distance you could walk in three steps for over 30 years. Why does it exist? I went to Japan to find out.
