Filling a house with scented smoke was also probably a quite successful way to push the plague out of it.

The pointy masks that doctors wore looked that way because they would stuff them full of bouquets of flowers and herbs to cover the stench of the pestilent flesh and rotting corpses of the dying and dead all around them. It was not an aesthetic choice.
