I can almost guarantee that there were schools named after both Strom Thurmond and George Wallace somewhere at the time this strip was written (if not still today).
Couldn't find any schools named after George Wallace, but there are still some streets and other buildings named after him, and at least one school suspiciously named "Wallace" that I suspect was renamed to some other Wallace as an act of malicious compliance.

Unfortunately, there is a George C Wallace community college in Alabama
I just made another reply about it, it is actually named for his father. Not sure if that is better or worse.
