The French government (specifically the conseil d'État) has stated that neither Mélenchon nor his party La France Insoumise (France Unbowed) are far-left. Their stated goals for governing are comparable to Mitterand or FDR - social democrats.

It's this kind of framing by press that maintains the kind of hostility towards the press that OP has noted in a sibling comment.

In that same link:

In 2024, they were declared simply "to the left". In 2026, the interior ministry decided to reclassify them. So, we're both technically right. Not to mention, the interior ministry is headed by a dude who has called Marine Le Pen "soft" in the past and is vociferously anti-left. my bad, the dude in question is now heading the ministry of justice.

Anyways the justification given by the actual head of the ministry of the interior had almost nothing to do with the concrete politics of Mélenchon nor his party/movement and almost everything to do with their member's unwillingness to essentially play nice with the current government:

And for what it's worth, some of the others who are classified far-left (and actually call themselves far-left) think that LFI is not far left enough to warrant the label:

Those are some ... choice excerpts. They don't describe the level of bashing and aggrieved hostility he has received from the mainstream press for the past ten years (which has coincidentally been billionaire-owned for most of this time period), nor how his campaign promises are aligned with Bernie sanders and zorahn mamdani and light-years away from trump.

Temperament-wise, he is definitely not a sanders or mamdani, that's for sure. More of a firebrand than the lying conman that Trump is, in my opinion.

Mediapart isn't billionaire owned. He insults them anyway.

They're not exactly mainstream, either; I stated the mainstream press is billionaire owned.

As for the insults, they don't come from nowhere; Mediapart has been wishy-washy on upholding their own journalistic rigour when it comes to reporting on LFI precisely when much of the media landscape is actively hostile towards them. For example, the media observatory ACRIMED has written about it last year as part of a broader article on this hostility: https://www.acrimed.org/Ce-que-nous-dit-l-acharnement-mediatique-contre
