I've dug into this a bit. The removed guide is https://codeberg.org/ap-next/ap-next/src/branch/main/guide.md which just documents how ActivityPub is mostly being used, as of 2026. It's not prescribing the future or trying to foreclose other options.

https://codeberg.org/ap-next/ap-next/src/branch/main does have some 'scary' text saying "This project is dedicated to evolving the ActivityPub protocol." which might look ominous to the W3C people, who are also trying to evolve the AP protocol... But jumping straight to "this is a fork" seems overly reactive.

The author, silverpill, has a long history of producing useful FEPs which have been quite influential. So this 'ap-next' thing isn't coming out of nowhere or from someone without practical grounding in the domain.
