Here, we aim to review the larger context of the murder of Corey Ruiz, exploring the political tensions in Madison, the history of the city’s treatment of unhoused Madisonians, and how political organizers and non-profits have failed to get to the root of these issues by making impotent demands. Police violence towards the unhoused community in Madison and towards people of color is rampant in the city; the execution of Corey Ruiz is a continuation and escalation of that violence. Corey’s execution, recorded in cell phone footage, was horrific, and his blood will forever stain the hands of city officials, legislatures, and politicians, as well as the police who carry out their orders.
