I sometimes have trouble keeping my weight up to healthy levels, and so I eat cashew butter almost every day.

But I recently had periodontal surgery. They told me a bunch of dietary restrictions afterword (soft foods, no straws, that sort of thing) and I asked specifically about "nut butters" to make sure that was ok. To my dismay, they said that nut butters had chunks of stuff (nuts, specifically) that would not be good to get into the healing sutured wound.

I lost a bit of weight that week while floundering for something high-calorie that I could eat to make up for the lack of cashew butter in my diet. (Plus, eating was more of a PITA than usual given how much extra thought I had to put into my diet before I started preparing myself a meal. "Oh I can have thi- no wait, it's got chunks of jalapenos in it. How about... no that won't work either." That kind of thing.)

What I finally settled on to hold me over until I was healed enough eat cashew butter again was: half-and-half. It's super high-calorie. Worked quite well. I had like one or one-and-a-half cups of it a day.

Now, that I'm more healed, I'm still glad to be back to eating cashew butter, though. Half-and-half was fine and all, but not as good.

Were you not able to have 'smooth' nut butters rather than crunchy ones, or is that not smooth enough?

I didn't ask specifically about smooth or chunky. I just said "nut butters" and she said that wasn't a good idea. Maybe I should have pushed back a bit. 🤷

I guess technically "smooth" nut butters still have chunks, just much much smaller chunks, but yeah. It does make sense that a smooth nut butter would probably be much safer.

Actually, I had a root canal not terribly long before I had the periodontal surgery. The tech there said not to eat anything sticky (listing "bubble gum" as an example). I asked about "nut butters" and she said "I don't know what that is". Lol. I had to specify "like peanut butter". And she said "oh, right. Not a good idea."

So, honestly, when I asked the periodontist about nut butters, it seemed like a long shot in my mind even before I asked, just because the endodontist had said "no" on the nut butter thing. Might have made me less apt to push back and ask something like "even if it's smooth?"

It sounds like you probably made the right call by playing it safe!

I've never tried cashew butter though, maybe I'll give it a go
