Mark Carney: Why I Rejected Trump’s Trade Deal
So last evening, I instructed our negotiators to return to Ottawa. We cannot accept what they’ve offered, and we will not give what they’ve asked. Over the past year, the US has imposed a series of tariffs that violate its commitment under our agreement with them in Mexico, so-called CUSMA. The United States has continually changed the rationale for these actions, from fentanyl to taxes on US tech giants, to certification of US aircraft, to the sharing of tolls of a bridge that Canada built and paid for, to our dairy policy, to provincial decisions not to sell American alcohol during the trade war, to a television advertisement that quoted Ronald Reagan, to smoke from wildfires while they threatened our communities.

The US must be considered a bad faith actor, and should be avoided as far as possible. Tighter cooperation between Canada and Europe will hopefully work well for both, and will hopefully lessen the blow of having to deal with an unstable US.
A bad faith actor that will only take an agreement as evidence of capitulation and cancel the agreement to ask for more. It is absolutely a waste of time.
Canada-EU trade is barely 10% of Canada-US trade. We can never replace US trading with Asia or Europe because of geography.
Like he said: Even when we make less money, it's still better to no longer be dependent one single trade partner. Otherwise, such a "partner" will forever be able to force you into anything they want. It simply is logical to have more options.
It just means we must make our other trade agreements better, easier, and more profitable.
can't make a deal with somebody who can't be trusted
Why not suspend all energy trade? Stick it to the US even more when they act in bad faith. Plus it would help to get rid of the fascists in November. And why not call it what it is- another Epstein distraction.
You may be surprised to know Canada has been a net importer of US electricity since 2023, and the gasoline we burn here in the East is from the US.
Death to trump
Wait, the Cheeto suddenly wanted Canada to ban French or what? Either way, I'm sure they just asked bullshit yet again
I'm sure they pushed for this so that later they can use it as a flimsy excuse to invade some small part of Canada or something
I can't find any specifics on the french thing, which makes me think it was either so ridiculous it's not worth mentioning, or so benign they want to indirectly rage bait the French into thinking Carney is willing to fight for their culture.
