To be clear: I am not on the dads side but I get it. Imagine wanting to share a once-in-a-lifetime hike up mount Fuji with your sons and having to turn around most of the way to the summit because your kid doesn't understand how special this is and doesn't understand that they might regret it. Not to mention you have another kid who would be missing out on the experience cause their brother's a little shit.

Not saying the dad should have done that, but I would also be conflicted.
