There are a lot of properties in my area that were wiped out in the original Ash Wednesday bushfires, all those decades ago.
More recently, they were all rebuilt by people who want the tree change. In the 2000s they were all overgrown with so much fuel that we were all confident that there would be a reenactment of Ash Wednesday any summer now.
After what happened in Kinglake, Marysville and Mallacoota, however, it appears that the current residents and councils have had a bit of a wake up call.
There aren’t years of bark and brush along the roadside and most houses have a 10 metre break around the buildings. Last Resort refuges are clearly marked and are accessible to everyone in the town.
