Unless your entire library is on Amazon, a Kindle is a terrible idea anyways
I always copied directly onto mine, got it cheap with their "ads", wifi only. Only it doesn't get to see wifi.
And now its also hacked! So I can't get ads even on wifi now, and I get via OPDS on koreader!
FWIW, in no way a recent purchase.
How did you hack it? Any cool new features?
I have a kindle paperwhite that I think is like 10 years old, still getting used in airplane mode so Amazon can’t remotely destroy my books..

Mostly koreader (being incredibly customizable it makes for a much better experience) and being able to use OLDS. Koreader is apparently much better for PDFs too, but I'm always epub anyway. Now I can just tether ti my phone while I'm out and hit my personal library, rather than having to download a bunch in advance at home.
And the ad block of course.
One on my list to try is to see how well it handles .cbz as well. I don't read comics that often though so I haven't tried yet.
Good for you! People shit on Kindle, rightfully so because of some policies, but a lot of the Kindles are really good. Older models are cheap and easy to find used, replacement parts and batteries are widely available, and there’s a big modding community around them. Since Kindles are everywhere, they’re easier to fuck around with.
I've never bought a single ebook from Amazon, but I have read a shit ton of books on my Kindles. Solid tech.
I have a few Kindles, and I've never bought a book from amazon. You can load DRM-free books on them directly.
I got a used one recently. Reading free through Libby. Loving it. I've read more in two months than i have in the last two years!
