It looks like the IBM 6000 did not release until 1990. In 1981 IBM launched the IBM Personal Computer (Model 5150). It is possible Berke was just making up numbers to make it seem as a newer more powerful model, and the actual IBM 6000 was just where the name took IBM in 1990.

I guess there always is the chance the 6000 was named by a fan of Mr Oliver Wendell Jones.
