We had this in our country too. Something along the lines of "These cameras will only ever be used to search for wanted criminals by their license plates". And guess what? Now they are used for tracking, checking phone usage, checking seatbelts, etc.
This is the reason privacy advocates tell you that even the smallest of infringements on our privacy and freedom will be abused. You can't give them a hand because they take your whole arm. And worst of all? All this infrastructure is an extremely powerful weapon if abused by fascists, so even with the best of intentions, future politicians can decide to use the weapon to find and punish anybody who they dislike. Just look at the US how fast their democracy got raped.
Fuck this BS.

I don't see a problem with regular speed cameras. What exactly is the problem (besides Flock lying/mission creeping)? Like, if Flock had said upfront on Day 1 they were going to do this, would it still be a problem?
Everything else about Flock (ALPRs in general) aside, the AI frequently reads the plate wrong. We've only heard of a few cases where they pull over the wrong car (and hold people at gunpoint in front of their kids) because their database of stolen cars isn't that large in the grand scheme of things.
If they start using them for everyday things, it's going to become quite clear just how often the AI is incorrect when people start getting speeding tickets in the mail for states they've never been to.
I mean that's the real problem. Someone or someAI misreading a plate will happen, the problem is the cops being trigger happy lunatics.
Have you read how police are using them to stalk women they have a romantic interest in? Or how they were used in Texas to track down a woman who had an abortion.
These are just two stories I knew off the top of my head. There are many more. Feel free to go find some.
Sadly, the problem with regular speed cameras is that they catch speeders, and carbrain society insists on its right to break laws.
How do you miss the point so completely like this?
