Sergei Eisenstein produced a silent movie of the ordeal in 1925 based on the actual events. The movie, Battleship Potemkin, was considered the greatest movie ever made up until the 1950s. As late as 2022 the movie was rated 54th greatest movie ever made, and has consistently been in the top ten for a century.

One scene in the film, the massacre on the Odessa steps has been considered one of the most influential scenes in cinema history.

Eisenstein hoped that the orchestral soundtrack to the silent film would be rewritten every 20 years to keep it fresh and relevant. Rewrites of the soundtrack have been contributed at various times over the past century, with one of the latest being in 2004 when the Pet Shop Boys wrote a sound track for it. Their music is a fusion of orchestra and electronic, with the orchestral performed by the Dresden sinphonic orchestra.

The movie, accompanied by live playing of the soundtrack by the PSBs and the Dresden orchestra, premiered in 2004 at an open air concert in Trafalgar Square in London for an audience of 20,000 people.
