You know, if they don't want to go it completely alone as an independent country, Canada might be open to an 11th province.
An ACTUAL province, not just a territory.
Act like a complete asshole to the local population, literally treat them like second class citizens, and then wonder why independence movements like this keep propping up
I have watched them over time. The different factions have their ups and downs, but near as I can tell none has ever been dominate.
As a US citizen I'm content with whatever the people there want. Full state, or complete independence - either is just fine with me. I'm slightly against remaining a territory if I have to choose, but this is very slightly. However the people need to have a strong preference for something and so far I don't see it.
Yes there has been talk a number of times about bringing them in as the 51st state. But there are plenty on the island that prefer staying a territory. I can't remember right now what I read years ago. But there are pros and cons to each. As a territory they don't get a lot of the disaster relief Etc that states get. But I guess in terms of their wealthy they have tax advantages? There were a few other things as well. But fuck the tax loophole nonsense.
I'd prefer to see what the majority of the island wants happen. If they become a state it isn't going to change much or save the rest of us from the mess we've gotten ourselves in. If they want to be independent I certainly wouldn't blame them. Although considering how energetic the weather over the gulf has gotten anymore. That might be a Herculean task. Crazy huge storms coming through flattening the infrastructure there, Cuba and all around.
