Maybe also depending on legislation - e.g. where I'm from, you can demand from the seller that he repairs the defect goods or replaces it for no additional cost. Only after 2 unsuccessful tries, the seller is allowed to refund the money.

This still doesn't keep sellers from trying to directly refund you, because many people still won't fight this or know their rights, though...
