TIL: „Oberdeutscher Präteritumschwund“ exists and I absolutely love it — and the name, obviously.
It basically describes the phenomenon that the simple past tense is vanishing or even has completely vanished from various German dialects. Apprently, this can be traced back until the 13th century.
