Why does everything depend on libsystemd0?
We've removed systemd from our system. Or so we thought.
libsystemd0 is still installed, though.
Turns out apt depends on it?? coreutils depends on it??? None of those should have anything to do with systemd????
So what's up with that? Is there a way to actually remove libsystemd0 without breaking everything in half?
This bug report seems to indicate that libelogind0 at least used to Provides: libsystemd0, but it doesn't seem to anymore on our systems.

All those things depend on libsystemd because they're built with the ability to interact with systemd in some way through that library. They work just fine if systemd itself isn't present, but they need that library to exist even if its functions are never actually used, since they've been built with the ability to use it if systemd is there.
Wouldn't it make more sense to use Devuan, a project that ships a Debian derivative without Systemd? I can't imagine a debian install will work right be straightforward to manage and maintain with systemd ripped out of it.
I wanted to try it then got nauseous.

I absolutely boycott and deride products and services that benefit or promote people and/or organizations that are anti human rights. That's not negotiable for me.
However, what I see here are some loud assholes who make a derivative from Devuan (not Devuan itself) and some forum admins with questionable moderation policies in a forum I have never visited. I also don't see why I should care one way or the other what some cretin like Brian Lunduke (who I only learned about recently) has to say about anything at all.
Even so my use of Devuan only costs the project, without any benefit to them whatsoever.
In short, I refuse to enrich or amplify terrible people. But I will not let terrible people burn down useful open-source infrastructure just by standing near it.
Hey, fair. From my perspective, this experience was my introduction to Devuan. When I open the door and see batshit crazy, I close the door.
Don't judge a distro by its forums. Unless its maintainers actively participate in and administer it.
That said, I'm not a fan of the "systemd is evil" stance.
... I had a quick look at the forum threads linked by the poster, and whoa... and lookee there, an old familiar from my Linux forum days. Terminal distro-hopper, has an account on all the cool forums and quickly finds the juiciest discussions and how to keep them moving, to put it mildly. And then there's always the blustering "can't even make a joke anymore" counterpart ...
Yeah fuck that shit with a spade. But once again, I'm not sure if this is representative of Devuan the distro.
I don't think Systemd is evil either, but wary of hard dependency creep on it.
