Also outright u-turning on one of their manifesto promises

Not really though:

Labour will not revoke existing licences and we will partner with business and workers to manage our existing fields for the entirety of their lifespan.

We will not issue new licences to explore new fields because they will not take a penny off bills, cannot make us energy secure, and will only accelerate the worsening climate crisis.

Rosebank and Jackdaw had been approved in 2022 and 2023 respectively, so are grandfathered in to the existing licences, despite a court challenge in the intervening years.

It's hard sometimes not to imagine there's some guy who shows up on day one and lays it all out; here's what the rich people will be getting, and devil take the hindmost. It would explain this kind of instantaneous disappointment very neatly (which is why I don't believe it, tidy theories being most often wrong).

I take it you've never seen Yes Minister or Yes Prime Minister then, very similar principle

You should. Very well written comedy. Hasn't really aged that much.
