There have been dozens of attempts over the years to make it happen, but at some point we really need CGL or someone to make an official place where we can register as Battletech players so we can find people in our area.
None that tend to stay open past a year sadly. Or within an hour or so drive. One of the many reasons I'm toying with the idea to open my own little game lounge..
Mechwarrior 1 deserves a complete remake. There was something very satisfying about decapitating enemies with surgical precision and harvesting the salvage, making the 5 houses pay more and more via negotiation, and travelling the galaxy selling cheap mechs for profits. And I even enjoyed the game's story-side, hunting down the dark wing bastards who stole your moon :D
