Bold of them to think that people would pay extra to sit for 20 hours in economy to get to London or Sydney a few hours earlier, rather than suffering the privation of stretching their legs at an airport somewhere in the middle. On such a journey, the airport break in the middle makes the whole thing just about tolerable.

Imagine being on a flight for 24hrs. I think I'd rather have the stop over.
I once went from Toronto to White Horse by bus. It took 100 hours and I don't recommend it.

Odd to see it go the long way around, over north america rather then the current paths via the middle east.
