Not a tech billionaire but otherwise James Cameron also matches that description. Actually Cameron is way more hardcore into "space is scary", and I "love deep sea" directions.

Cameron is much more into 'I love the deep sea', has more senoirity as a legitimate deep dive submersible expert, but Gabe is giving him a run for his money.

That yacht Gabe has?

He bought the shipyard so he could direct them to refit the yacht to also have a docking bay and facilities for a submersible, (and also a LAN party room lol) which he has since gone on to use to plumb the deep seas south of Japan, mapping various trench beds in high detail, and possibly capturing some never before seen hadal zone creatures on camera.

https://youtube.com/watch?v=GsbYXGVSPmo

He is literally playing Subnautica IRL.

Gabe also funds actual legitimate neuroscience / medical brain implant research. Unlike Elon's Neuralink... which poached a PHD's research team and then basically stole and claimed credit for inventing a certain kind of brain implant tech... and then ran around saying he was gonna change the world with this half baked over hyped tech, untill he got bored / came down from ketamine...

Gabe is a bit more hands off and just actually lets the experts do expert things, try to discover and invent new ways to help people with Parkinsons and such... the goal isn't primarily to make money, it is to do research.

https://www.techspot.com/news/108049-valve-gabe-newell-backing-new-brain-chip-startup.html

He's closer to an old school American business tycoon... an actual philanthropist who has more money than he knows what to do with, so he throws it at things he thinks are neat and could contribute to society in some way.

Even Bill Gates, for all the shit he absolutely deserves to be criticized (if not imprisoned) for, he did and does throw a pretty substantial amount of money at cancer research, that has led to very useful research there.

Now, I still don't think billionaires should exist, but, they do. And at least some of them do less horribly bad things with some of their money than say, I dunno, directly fund and bankroll fascist politicians.

The man has actually combined the two! Avatar: go to space in order to go under water. The Abyss: Aliens come from space in order to live under water.

4

Also not with space but Titanic: build a massive model and sink it, so I can justify a budget to buy a submersible.

If you think his movies aren't all about the tech you need to think again.

In the past maybe, but the last two Avatar films didn't really push any new tech.

Not all tech advancements are spectacle level advancements.

A lot are "little" things that just make the whole thing look/feel better but you don't necessarily notice on its own.

I was disappointed by The Way of Water. For a guy who's spent more time undersea than... basically anyone who isn't a navy soldier in a submarine... it doesn't really come across in the movie. I mean, we didn't even see coral bleaching! In what is supposed to be an anti-colonial environmental movie!

I guess whale hunting is an easier message to sell to the masses.

Also Paul Allen from Microsoft was pretty heavily invested into space shit when he died.

There also was that one billionnaire that died in a Titanic exploration accident. Poor son though, he didn't want to go.

I actually met the guy. I worked at the place next to where they were building it in everett. He bought me a beer once at the bar in the marina and tried to recruit me.

I just laughed and shot the shit with him. I didn't trust in my experience for what he was doing and now I know it was the right choice.

Anon must live under a rockpill if he thinks Gabe is the only billionaire interested in the deep sea. There's Cameron and that fuckwad who crushed his kid with a tin can submarine.

17

And Cameron has made a bunch of movies about people on other planets. There's the Avatar movies and some other movie he made in the 80s about aliens that I can't remember the name of.

5

Can we stop saying using redpill phrasing like pilled or mogged or based or whatever else the moronosphere is saying. It's not a clever meme it's just being stupid and validating an awful world view in the process.

You're just mad because you're being boatmogged by gaben's seamaxxing.

4chan is the armpit of the internet, you can't really go to a community that reposts from there and expect to find anything other than the lowest quality communication.

Is that so or is it One Crazy Detail You Missed That Will Make You Rethink The Matrix?

I've heard the Wachowskis said it was inspired by it, yes.

What aliens? Gabe made games about zombies, robots, and trans-dimensional beings... I cant think of any games about aliens...

18

Actually, technically, the way teleportation works in Half Life/Portal universe...

They are aliens, extraterrestrials, they're not from ... a mirror realm, a distinct and different universe or timeline.

Xen acts as a kind of ... bus stop, for the universe, if that makes any sense. But it does exist somewhere in our Universe, it is not in an alternate/parrelel universe/timeline ala Marvel different universes.

Xen is a relay, that, for whatever reason, seems to be a spot in the actual universe where transdimensional travel often ... ends up at, or traverses through. Like a strange attractor in a chaotic system.

So this goes for the Combine as well. Xen, Vorts, Headcrabs, the Combine... they are all from our Universe, though they could be from totally different galaxies than our own.

The teleportation tech/system in the HL/Portal Universe works more like the Webway from 40k, than it is like the Warp from 40k.

It is a system / series of gateways in ... string theoretic 11 dimensional space, that in our 3d experience of reality, appear as basically a complex network of subway tunnels, semi-stable wormholes. The Combine make great use of this, the Human Resitance barely understand it, but use it in different ways, and the Portal tech just most directly punches wormholes through 3d space via ... fucking moondust and intensely technogically perfected spite, or something.

... even in the instances in the series where time itself is ... paused or traversed... by G Man or the Vorts ... these occurences seem to all take place inside of a single consistent and coherent universe.

12

Alien just means from somewhere other than earth. Another dimension pretty much fits the bill, there. Like, you're simultaneously being too and not enough pedantic for your argument to really hit. The uncanny valley of pedantry

The deep sea is way more important for us to understand than space. Well in some regards.

It would be more immediately beneficial.

13

Actually ☝️🤓, that is a common urban myth. We have mapped virtually everything down there, we were not everywhere with submarines and cameras but as far as i know virtually all of the deep sea has been mapped from the surface and the general consensus is that there is nothing spectacular or extraordinary down there.

Maybe an unusual or unknown species here and there, but nothing like some unknown frontier for mankind with potentially revolutionary discoveries.

humanity knows more about whats in space than whats in the deep abyss

Silly fallacy. What about the deep abysses on planets we don't yet know exist?

4

If we're being nitpicky and technical, stick to the moons of Jupiter. Anything outside our solar system is practically inaccessible (baring the discovery of a frankly ludicrous loophole in relativity). Information that can't be discovered with telescopes is gonna stay undiscovered. The deep ocean and the little shoal of our planetary neighbors at least has the potential for further study.
