📡 How exactly does the "and ranging" part of a gaydar work?

The detection part I understand, but if the ranging part is more than visual dead reckoning I'd love to understand the mechanics behind it (and possibly theory, too, although I suspect that that part will go over my head).

there is no ranging and the mechanics are pretty simple: if its pointed at you (doesnt matter where you or the gaydar are positioned in space) it will return a signal, if pointed somewhere else there wont be a signal.
