What's Schema.org really for, how does it help search engines?

If sites already have title, meta name description, link rel me and all kinds of meta and link tags, there are tons of HTML tags that already do everything Schema does, it seems so redundant, so what is it really for and is it even worth wasting time putting in your site?

It essentially lets search engines extract richer data from the page.

It's usefulness demands entirely on the proper of the page.

If that's important to you, add it. If not, didn't bother, you're not going to compromise the direct usefulness of the page to humans by omitting it.
