USGS is predicting catastrophic casualty levels

USGS hazard modeling warned that casualties and damage could be much worse than the early confirmed reports suggested, with one projection showing a 44% chance that fatalities could exceed 10,000. Some media summaries of the same USGS outlook said the modeled death toll could range from 10,000 to as high as 100,000 depending on building vulnerability and exposure in the hardest-hit areas.
