First smiling photograph EDIT THAT I WAS PREVIOUSLY AWARE OF: Eating rice, China (approx 1901-1904), collected by B. Laufer
I have always (well okay, since I saw it) loved this photograph. Especially the look on his face.
Shit i gotta go get some rice.
If I understand correctly, and there's a pretty good chance I don't, this was the first photograph that didn't have the subject standing solemnly.
edit: whoopsie
Although adults often did have solemn expressions, there are several photos from the late 19th Century featuring people smiling.
Here's one of my favourites, from the 1880s.
In case you're wondering why the background looks so weird, it's a "hidden mother" photo. The baby's mum will have been sitting behind them, disguised by the fabric.
Never thought I’d see his baby photo.
hey, i learned something today! thank you!
This is wildly incorrect. This is trivially debunked and would imply an over-60-year gap from the first confirmed photo of a person to the first one where someone's smiling in it.
uh no see, all of those are grimaces. you can tell by the shut up. :3
thanks dude, i still love the photo from his expression but i am glad i won't be spreading misinfo now
