As I've aged, I'm eternally grateful that I've gotten fatter instead of more politically conservative.

I’ve never understood the ghouls who tell me I’ll get “more conservative” as I get older. It baffles the mind how I’d go from believing everyone has a right to healthcare to “actually, fuck you, I’m good”.
Definitely preferable to get a bit fatter instead.
The "theory" was that as you accumulate more wealth and property, you become more protective of said wealth and property.
I'm sure you can see the first of several bad assumptions in that theory.
The irony is that many people aren’t making the money needed to accumulate wealth/property. There’s nothing to protect.
This is also bad for patriarchy because it's kind of hard to maintain its core assumptions if you're not passing down a farm to your eldest son, or passing down anything at all for that matter
That's the theory. In reality people get more conservative because as we age we are more susceptible to strokes, dementia, and other mental illnesses.
Also selection bias. People who start rich are going to be more conservative on average, and because they're rich, they tend to live longer.
I don't know why getting older would make me all of a sudden hate Mexicans for some reason. As I've gotten older I've become more angry at the system, and more interested in detailed proposals for fundamentally alternative systems
The “ghouls” you speak of are just people who were able to afford shit back in the day.
Healthcare, a house, a few vacations abroad per year, kids and their education, all on (for the most part) just 1 job.
If you had all these things, yes, you’d probably be more FISCALLY conservative to preserve whatever amount of money you had saved and use it for retirement
Nowadays that reality has changed and was twisted into something that doesn’t reflect what it was, but the saying remained the same.
Basically shit doesn’t mean what it used to mean and people forgot that language and concepts evolve or erode over time.
Or if we want to make it more visual, on a scale from 0-100 where 0 is full liberal and 100 is full conservative, the needle was moved so far to the right that the “you’ll grow more conservative as you grow older” is now on the left side of the current status quo.
Why is everyone getting fat over here? Maybe I’m the minority, but as I’ve gotten older I’ve started gravitating toward healthy food and it wasn’t even intentional. Maybe my taste buds changed.
