I'm new to the platform and I'm quite confused

NSFW

Hi everyone, I would really appreciate it if you could help me understand how this platform works and advise me on which communities I can post in, because I don't really understand it. I made two posts in some communities, but I think they're either too small or inactive. I'm not sure what to make of it. I came from Reddit, but I got tired of their unfair bans.

Lemmy is pretty much the same thing as reddit for regular people. I think the thing you're stumbling over is that Lemmy only has around 50k active daily users. Reddit has about a 100 million. That's a 2000 fold difference. Every post on Lemmy gets 2000 times less attention in other words.

You know, I'm an optimistic girl and I feel more comfortable here on queen reddit; maybe here the saying "quality over quantity" applies.

I think unless you are an old timer from when things like gonewild were brand new, and onlyfans wasn't a thing, it might be hard to understand lemmy.

Lemmy is what Reddit was like when Reddit was brand new. There just aren't many users and the ones that are here are here for the love of the game. If you don't genuinely enjoy what you are doing, you aren't going to get the kind of engagement you might expect from Reddit. We are just a small community at the edge of the internet.

Hey! I'm not an old timer! I'm barely in my 40s! And I understand Lemmy just fine. Now where's the click to subscribe button and who do I make my checks out to? /s

Lol, well it's a matter of learning new technologies, right? More than an age issue, perhaps it's a matter of passion.

And hurry up! If I don't get these tapes back to blockbuster before 5PM I have to pay for another night and I really don't feel like watching Die Hard again..

Since your account is on fedinsfw, you can find communities that you might want to post to by browsing local (ones on fedinsfw) communities.

https://fedinsfw.app/communities?search=&home_select=local&subscribe_select=any&topic_id=0&feed_id=0&language_id=0&nsfw=all&instance=

Also, if you look at the "posts" tab on a user page for someone who posts stuff on fedinsfw, you might find communities you'd like.

If you're looking for a lemmy app for your phone, I recommend voyager:

Hope this helps sexy!

I think it would help us, to help you if you could ask more specific questions.

I'm a girl trying to get my page ranked, I hope you won't judge me for this! But everyone lives as they can... I still don't really know how to find communities here, that's my main question; On Reddit I feel like there are mafias, because there are many of us who sell content on the platform but only some of us get banned even though my posts aren't spam or direct sales.

The fediverse is infinite, decentralized social media.

Unlike corporate social media (like Reddit, Twitter, Youtube, etc.), the fediverse (Lemmy, Mastodon, Pixelfed, etc.) is spread out across connected servers, run and moderated by the community members all over the world. There is no central authority, company or billionaire in charge here. It's just a bunch of users and communities talking and sharing with each other to form a big whole.

FediNSFW.app is just 1 server on the fediverse, (which happens to be running a somewhat reddit-like software called Piefed, if you care), and much like Reddit.com it is home to many users and communities.

However, unlike Reddit, FediNSFW is connected to bunch of different servers in a greater federation container even more users and communities, and users from these various servers can all interact with each other as if it was all one site. So as you browse the site you'll probably see users like "[email protected]" posting and commenting from elsewhere on the network. This is good for a lot of reasons--it's not controlled by billionaires or beholden to corporate shareholder interests, it's not easily corrupted by power-hungry admins, it's not centralized in any given country or culture, and so on.

If you're finding particular niche communities are empty or inactive, that's unfortunate, but the best thing that you can do is start posting things and being active. This is still a much smaller platform than reddit, and while there are enough users on popular communities to make it work well, it can be a problem for smaller communities for sure.

Wow, thank you for taking the time to give me such a detailed answer. I hope I have better luck here.

Welcome. I'll generally search for communities I'm interested in then sort by top last day. I use the Boost app, so not sure how it displays in other apps/web, but I can quickly see number of subscribers, total number of posts, and how long the community has been around. Useful for eyeballing how active comms are. If you're still curious, pop in and check out the latest posts. Do that routinely for a while and you can build up a decent list to follow.

I can't help much for WHERE to post - I generally just leave comments and browse All since there aren't a ton of people and you can get through pretty much anything on All pretty quickly. I have filtered a lot of comms for various reasons, so that probably helps, though. I've noticed a lot of communities are mirrored from reddit - I'd search the subreddit names you used to post in, see what's here and active. Failing that, a keyword or two of the type of content you're looking to supply. Pretty sure there's at least a gonewild comm on a few instances you could participate in.

Good luck and welcome again.

Wow, thanks! Right away, I felt like everyone here is much friendlier than on Reddit. On that platform, even asking how to use it properly requires karma, and asking questions like that gets you banned for botting! I feel like it's much more welcoming here! Hey, where can I get the Boost app you mentioned?

I believe its called Boost for Lemmy in the Play store for Android. Based on your other question about following, though, Boost doesn't have the option. Just message and block. I just used to use Boost for Reddit and I was used to the layout. I should experiment with others...

Oh, okay, I see—it's like an app for managing the platform, sort of like a client... right?

lemmy.world

Yup. Just an app to manage/view/whathaveyou as an alternate to using the web interface. But you end up finding one that let's you follow, I'd be interested.

Some communities are set up so that only mods/admins can post in them, but most communities are open. If there's a community you'd like to post in but there's no "create post" button, you may want to search for another community or even create your own community where you can make your own rules.
