I'm not calling King a hypocrite. I am saying he was a very smart political thinker who had to play the long game.
Bayard Rustin was a gay man who was one of King's closest allies and friends. They worked together to make the March on Washington happen. King never stood up for LGBTQIA+ rights. Never talked about them at all. Because he knew that 1960s america could not handle that conversation, and it would destroy any progress the Civil Rights coalition had made.
Another example of 'selling out' would be Frederick Douglas backing Abe Lincoln over a candidate who was full on Abolitionist. Douglas calculated that it was better to win and have the President's ear than to lose and have nothing.
