To some, yes. They are pretty neat. However, not everyone cares all too much about football and the world cup, and many don't really like how it was very in your face.

What if Firefox added a widget counting down when a fancy watch brand is going to release their nth anniversary watch? Some people might like that, but most people aren't that invested in watches. Or perhaps a pop up about next-gen laptops and mini PCs, there are some people who would appreciate that, but most people see something like that as an advertisement.

You could put any other topic as an example: innovative display panels, networking equipment, bicycles, fashion, dishwashers, power tools, 3D printers, backpacks, miniatures, whatever. There is a minority of people who would love something like that, but the majority see it as annoying advertisements. A happy middle would be to add these wallpapers and widgets as an opt-in experience, maybe as an extension or something, I dunno.

It was optional, there was a suggestion asking if you would like to add the widget.

Yes, most people did not like the box asking you to use those features. I would think it would be in the interests of everyone for these to be opt-in rather than opt-out.

Most people probably didnt care. It wasnt a popup it was a button on a new tab. I dont see where the intense desire for everything to be static comes from, if there is something new I would like to know about it.

Look back at some of the examples I have given. Perhaps you are interested in world cup things, but most people aren't. How things are now, people see it as something a bit forced, when it really would have been better as an extension pack or something else that's opt-in. If you replace the world cup with topics you aren't as interested in, I think you will see the problem.

Here are some more examples if you aren't convinced:

Imagine if Nestle did a coffee promotion with Firefox, and the browser badgered you to use the Nestle themed backgrounds. It would be pretty annoying, right? It's not a war crime, but it taints the user experience.

Or what if McDonalds did something with Firefox, where the start-up sound is the "doo-doo doo-doo doooo", and widgets that show you the nearest McDonalds location were added as well. For most people, this would be a blatant advertisement.

Same goes for other topics I have mentioned, a few people might be interested, but most aren't. It is in the interests of everyone for these to be opt-in as an extension, so the people who do want it can install it themselves rather than having it baked in for all installations!

I think its find for them to show things you might not be interested in. I trust they'd only show things aligned with their brand and not shill Nestle coffee. The world cup is followed by a significant % of the world so an un-intrusive option asking users if they want to opt in is more useful than it is annoying.

To compare the world cup to mcdonalds or nestle coffee is crazy. The world cup is the largest sports event in the world and is followed all across the globe, its expected to have 5-6billion people following it in some way and 1.5 billion watching.

To compare the world cup to McDonald as or nestle coffee is crazy. The world cup is the largest sports event in the world and is followed all across the globe, its expected to have 5-6billion people following it in some way and 1.5 billion watching

Both McDonalds and Nestle are huge megacorps with extensive influence globally.

What if Samsung, Xiaomi, or Apple was promoted in Firefox? They all have very significant market share in smartphones globally, and Apple trades places with Nvidia for the title of most valuable company in the world, but I'm sure most people wouldn't want ads for them.

Or maybe if Toyota or Volkswagen did a promotion: they have both sold billions of cars worldwide under many different brands, so I believe they are a closer comparison with the World Cup in terms of just numbers. But even still, most people aren't car nerds, and will dislike the promotion of either company's latest model.

Or maybe if Saudi Aramco was promoted instead, the largest oil company in the world producing millions of barrels per day, and being very significant for the energy needs of most countries. Nearly everyone would be unhappy for this kind of promotion.

But what if you believe that companies don't count, because "Mozilla is too perfect to suck up to them", here are some more examples that are specifically events, like the World Cup:

  • Taylor Swift concerts (or another similarly huge music artist)
  • Disney movie showings (or another large media company, like Warner Brothers)
  • Eurovision (very huge in many European countries)
  • Olympics (or some other large sporting event)
  • etc.

I'm sure you wouldn't like many of those, even if they do have similarly large audiences as the Fifa world cup.

But most people aren't so invested that they want the browser widgets. It would be better if it was an extension that you could install, rather than something baked into the browser (that would be properly opt-in).

It would be beneficial to everyone if it was a separate extension. It would mean less preinstalled bits while probably also giving the people who want the features more of it (since it doesn't have the restriction of being preinstalled into the browser).

The world cup is a huge event that brings people together from all around the world. Its completely different to McDonalds, Samsung or Apple. Firefox has a space for promoting these sites in the default pins where they already pin amazon and Temu.

Im not sure how taylor swift would do something equivlent to the world cup but if she did and it was something like eurovision id be fine with seeing a little bubble asking if i wanted to add that widget to my startpage. I think it would be a good idea to do something for Eurovision, its a cool event and I miss it because no where I browse ever mentions it. I'd also be happy for them to do something for the Olympics.

The problem with opt in is that no one will even think to go look for it unless its advertised then people will cry that they wasted money advertising it.
